Bobby Caldwell first hit the US pop charts with the self-penned jazz ballad ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’, which reached number 9 in early 1979. He played all the instruments on his self-titled album, which featured the tracks ‘Take Me Back To Then’, a rhythmic, slow chugger, and the ballad ‘Come To Me’. His follow-up, ‘Coming Down From Love’, with a guitar riff reminiscent of George Benson, narrowly missed the US Top 40 almost a year later. Although his US chart success since then has been limited to the NAC charts, Caldwell has become a superstar on the Far East market, particularly in Japan. He is also an in-demand songwriter for other acts, penning hits for artists including the Commodores (‘Janet’), Chicago (‘What Kind Of Man’), Boz Scaggs (‘Heart Of Mine’), and Peter Cetera and Amy Grant (‘Next Time I Fall’). In the mid-90s Caldwell released an acclaimed collection of big band-era standards (Blue Condition). He repeated the idea three years later with Come Rain Or Come Shine. Caldwell has also written prolifically for film and television, notably for theNew Mickey Mouse Club show, and also various commercials.
