b. Detroit, Michigan, USA. One of the legends of contemporary gospel music, Hammond’s workload and commitment has won him an expansive fanbase and the unreserved respect of his peers. His talents first came to light in the early 80s as bass player and vocalist with the Winans, and then as a founder member of the Grammy-nominated gospel sextet Commissioned. After 12 years service, including the release of nine albums, he finally resigned his tenure in that group in December 1994. As energetic behind the scenes as he is prolific as a performer, he has toured with Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams on the highly successful Tour Of Life, set up a joint venture with Verity Records to help with distribution for his Detroit-based production company Face To Face (founded in 1992), and established himself as the leading gospel producer of his era. He also launched a new version of his choir (the Radical For Christ ensemble), producing a series of ‘in the house’ records and several bestselling and award-winning albums as lead artist.
