From Detroit, Michigan, USA, Shades Of Blue are known for just one hit, "Oh How Happy", which, with its singalong simplicity and good cheer, raced up the chart in 1966, reaching number 12. The members of the group were Nick Marinelli, Linda Allan, Bob Kerr and Ernie Dernai. They were discovered and produced by soul singer Edwin Starr, who was looking for a white group to record "Oh How Happy", a song he had written years earlier. After the group were turned down by another Detroit company, Starr took them to Harry Balk's small Impact operation, and with "Oh How Happy", Impact achieved its only national hit. The group could not give Balk another big record, as their two subsequent records in 1966 - "Lonely Summer" and "Happiness" - stalled on the lower reaches of the charts.
