My One and Only Thrill Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions Worrisome Heart

b. 1985, New Jersey, USA. This Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter and pianist was inspired to begin writing after suffering a life-changing accident in November 2003. Struck by a car while riding her bicycle and suffering severe pelvic and head injuries, Gardot was encouraged by her physician to begin writing and recording songs during her lengthy recuperation. She had played in Philadelphia piano bars while studying fashion at the city’s Community College, but the accident triggered a previously hidden songwriting talent. Her debut EP, Some Lessons, was recorded bedside while Gardot was still recovering from her injuries. Released in summer 2005, Gardot’s soulful vocals adding a welcome depth to her sparse, jazzy pop. Her full-length debut, Worrisome Heart, was recorded with producer Glenn Barratt and released independently at the end of 2006. A glut of excellent reviews attracted the attention of Verve Records, who released a slightly altered version of the album two years later. Unfortunately, her physical ailments still limit Gardot’s live performances to a maximum of one or two a month.
