This retro disco recording project was conceived in 2006 by New York-based producer/DJ Andy Butler (b. Andrew Butler, Washington, DC, USA), a former student at the liberal arts institution Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers and a regular face on the New York City art scene. He was joined on the project’s 2008 self-titled debut by vocalists Antony Hegarty (of Antony And The Johnsons), Nomi, and Kim Ann Foxman, while production was jointly handled with Tim Goldsworthy of the DFA label. Mining a rich seam of authentic sounding underground disco from the late 70s, the project was brought up to date with some contemporary production flourishes. Of particular note were the tracks featuring Hegarty, whose introspective vocals helped add a welcome note of melancholy and self-doubt to the tone of the album.
