b. 18 July 1982, Dallas, Texas, USA. Pop rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Cabrera dropped out of a course at the University of Texas to concentrate on music. He had previously played in punk bands but switched direction as a member of the Dallas-based rock outfit Rubic’s Groove. Despite enjoying local success with the group, Cabrera elected to strike out on his own and in 2001 embarked on a solo career with 2001’s self-released, Elm Street. The album was a hit in Texas and attracted the attention of Joe Simpson, the father of teen pop star Jessica Simpson, who took over management of Cabrera’s career and began touting the artist around a number of major labels. Atlantic Records won the race for Cabrera’s signature and shortly afterwards he entered the studio with Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls to begin work on his major label debut, Take It All Away. There was a fair amount of substance behind the record company hype on this 2004 release, with melodic pop rock numbers such as ‘Let’s Take Our Time’ and ‘On The Way Down’ (a US Top 30 hit) demonstrating Cabrera’s undoubted talent. Cabrera’s career received a further boost when he was romantically linked to another member of the Simpson family, pop starlet Ashlee Simpson. The artist’s third album was released in the aftermath of the break-up of his relationship with Simpson.
