In 1978, the brothers Adolfo (b. Adolfo Ángel Alba, 1 September 1963, Mexico; vocals/keyboards) and Gustavo Ángel (b. 1968, Mexico; vocals) formed a group they named Conjunto La Brisa. They made some 45s and then, in the early 80s, were joined by their cousin, Fernando Ángel (b. 1963, Mexico; vocals/bass). Renaming the group Los Temerarios, they made their first album under this name. Adolfo is generally accepted as the principal force behind the group’s formation and success. Musicians including Karlo Vidal and Jonathan Armabilis often augment the trio for tours and recording sessions.
Dedicated to the presentation of the more romantic elements of Mexican ranchera music, Los Temerarios quickly became very popular with young Mexicans and extended their fanbase throughout Central America and the USA. The brothers and Fernando formed their own Ángel (later AFG Sigma) label in 1990, which was later bought out by the giant FonoVisa Records label. Among prestigious venues at which Los Temerarios have performed are New York City’s Radio City Music Hall and Mexico City’s La Sports Arena and Auditorio Nacional. They have received many nominations for awards, winning several. In 1991 alone, they were nominated for five Billboard awards. That same year, in Chile, they won the Gaviota De Plata award at the Festival De Vina Del Mar. The group is often the subject of attention from Mexico’s popular press, owing in large part to Adolfo Ángel’s occasionally outrageous behaviour with women. This is perhaps a reflection of the group’s name, which translates literally as ‘the reckless ones’.
