This US vocal trio comprised Brenda Jones, Shirley Jones and Valerie Jones (b. 17 April 1956, d. 2 December 2001), and first came to public attention after backing Diana Ross on tour. In the past they had opened for artists including B.B. King, the Four Tops and Little Richard. It was through Ross that they gained their first studio session, but it was not until 1977 that they released their debut single, produced by Kenny Gamble of Gamble And Huff; ‘You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else’ reached the US Top 40. Surpassing all original criticisms that they were too derivative of the Emotions, the trio established their own exquisite style with melodic and soulful vocals, luscious strings, tight horns and slick rhythms. However, owing to bad luck with two record companies that both collapsed, their chart success was wrecked; however, during the early 90s they returned with the release of Coming Back.
