b. 20 September 1954, Luton, Bedfordshire, England. White played electric guitar and keyboards with several rock and pop artists, including Al Stewart and Basia before declaring himself to be a ‘reformed rocker’ and moving onto the edges of jazz. At the same time he made a shift to playing the acoustic guitar. Sometimes, critics have condemned White for not being a jazz musician although he himself has never claimed to be one. Nevertheless, there is about some of his playing a quality that displays a pleasant if sometimes frustratingly bland fusion between pop, rock and jazz. While he has worked with instrumentalists with bite, such as saxophonist Grover Washington Jnr. , much of his music is frequently in the form of smooth jazz wherein his companions have been less forceful players who have included artists such as Boney James and Gerald Albright. Sometimes there is a frustration on the part of the listener, willing White to crank his amp up and simply let rip.
